Less Brief Comments about SPooN 2.21
May. 14th, 2007 01:13 amAfter this last episode, there’s been a lot of speculation that Mary (who obviously knew the Demon) was part of one of those “other generations” of special children the Demon mentioned. I think this would be particularly fitting, for several reasons:
1) Being special seems to be a genetic thing. I’ve always assumed that being psychic wasn’t caused by the Demon, but was what attracted it – otherwise, why would they bother to show baby!Sam’s amazing mobile-turning-on-ing abilities, mention that Rosie seems to read minds, and have Andy and Webber/Anson/evil!Frodo separated at birth, if not to establish that the kids were psychic before coming in contact with the Demon? The case of Andy and his brother in particular definitely seems to suggest that it’s an inherited ability (especially since they had nearly identical powers) and so it would make sense that Sam got his powers from his mom.
2) It’s not that difficult to insert psychic!Mary into our current canon. I assume that at the very most, things didn’t progress far beyond the Battle Royale stage in the Demon’s plan for world domination or whatever, because if Mary was the only psychic kid to survive, she obviously wasn’t leading anyone’s army of darkness, and if she wasn’t the only one to survive, than a full-scale Thunderdome couldn’t have taken place. It’s possible things didn’t even get that far – she could have recognized the Demon even if she only had creepy dreams, like the Force lightning kid and Webson. Mary died when she was 29, so given a similar timeline to Sam’s generation, it would have been at least 6 years since anything demonic would have happened to her. This gives her plenty of time to learn to control her powers, so they weren’t immediately obvious to her family, say.
The only glitch in this theory is that if she WAS psychic, and had encountered the Demon at some point (as she must have), it would have been REALLY STUPID to leave her family unprotected from demonic activity. Personally, I can’t really see someone developing psychic powers and encountering demons NOT doing a little research on the subject, so it doesn’t really work to say she wouldn’t have known about that kind of stuff. However, there is the possibility that she HAD taken steps to protect her family, and that the Demon was just strong enough to ignore them: after all, even Meg could enter churches and stuff, and YED is presumably even more powerful. Since their house burned down after Mary’s death, any traces of protective stuff would have been gone as well. So she could have been psychic and NO ONE WOULD HAVE EVER KNOWN.
As for not telling John about her psychic abilities, it seems a reasonable guess that as she was married and starting a family in the suburbs of KANSAS, she was having a go at a normal life, which as we know from Sam’s example means a lot of denial, evasion, and possible lying. Also, it’s not like “So, are you psychic then, honey?” comes up in a lot of conversations, so she might not even have had to lie about her abilities; if nothing supernatural happened, she wouldn’t even have felt any pressure to mention them, either. Anyways, it’s entirely plausible that Mary was psychic and her family didn’t know.
3) If Mary was psychic, then Sam’s visions make a lot more sense. Aside from his one in “Home,” they’ve all either had to do with the Demon or other psychic kids or both. The one in “Home” can be very loosely tied to the Demon, in that it takes place in a house where the Demon briefly appeared before killing Mary, burning it down, and causing a rift in the time/space continuum or whatever. However, if Mary was also a psychic, a pattern emerges. His visions of Max inspired him to try to help Max by keeping him from killing his family; the ones in “Salvation” let him rescue Rosie’s mom, and possibly keep Rosie from being bled upon or flambéed; and his ones in “Simon Said” made him try to stop Webson, but also alert Andy to the fact that he had an EVIL TWIN with a rather unhealthy attitude towards his brother. (Even Ava’s visions go along with this: she dreamed about the Amazing Electric Scott and Sam both getting killed). In this vein, Sam’s vision in “Home” eventually resulted in Mary saying goodbye to her children, getting rid of the poltergeist, and ceasing to be a fiery ghost: from what we’ve learned since then, being a ghost kind of sucks, so this is definitely a good thing. Mary being psychic means that Sam’s visions can be neatly filed into 2 neat categories, rather than multiple handwavey ones.
4) This helps explains the Demon’s interest in Sam, despite the fact that Sam kind of sucks at being a psychic, and his family keeps trying to kill and/or thwart the Demon and HIS family. He’s a legacy!
Anyways, I rather like the implications of Mary being psychic. Her character would be complicated by the fact that at the very least she didn’t confide in John, and at the most, she might have been involved in demonic shenanigans before quitting. Ambiguous pasts are fun! However, I would prefer it if she wasn’t evil, because then Sam could stop angsting (well, a little anyway) about the inevitability of his turning dark side, since the source of his powers isn’t the Demon but, in fact, his mom. Also, I’m pretty sure this would mean that she’s Darth Vader (but hopefully a less evil version), and how cool would that be? We already know that Sam is Luke, and John is pretty much a really bad-tempered Obi-wan Kenobi, and Dean is everyone else. Then Sam could go around saying “I am a Jedi, like my mother before me!” and it would be awesome.

That, however, would be awesome. And would almost reconcile me to evil!Mary. Almost, but not quite.
