YAY CONTRA DANCING.
I think that's all that needs to be said about that.
I actually went to the gym this morning with Meera and Alice and Galina (sp?). Check out me being all active and stuff. In other cool news, I hung out with the bestest Brittany EVER on Thursday, and discovered that Linguistics is so fun I don't mind looking like a total fool by wandering around talking to myself after class. Yay. I also made cookies for the Botetourts gala tonight, which resulted in me making a mad dash across campus to get them to Reves before 5:00 yesterday. Chocolate-dark chocolate-Macadamia nut. Yum.
The weather here is insanely warm. It went up to like, 68° yesterday. Crazy.
Battlestar Galactica
Ok, so this week was a definite improvement. Still not up to the usual standard of awesomeness, but making progress nevertheless. There were not nearly as many “Wait…what the hell?” moments (as in “Black Market”, say), but there were a few:
- Starbuck’s Post-Traumatic Flashback Disorder, featuring Anders. I mean, he was cool and all, but she only knew him for an episode and a half: definitely not enough time for most of the audience to develop any real attachment to him. I think one of the main problems Ron D. Moore and Co. have with this 20-ep season is developing relationships and then distributing them evenly; if they wanted us to believe she was that attached to him, they might have maybe mentioned him more than twice in 10 episodes. Seriously.
- Suspiciously well-adjusted Apollo. Either he got over his many, many issues real fast, or he’s actually been replaced by a nymphomanic pod-person.
- Ok, so I know they’ve done the not-linear structure with other Starbuck episodes, but having 3/5 of the new episodes begin with such-and-such hours earlier? It’s losing its effectiveness.
- I was going to say Helo’s sudden turn as “Dear Abby,” but then I realized that apparently, Helo was just using his powers of awesome to divine the source of Starbuck’s troubles, and that he’s right and the writers just haven’t bothered to tell us anything. In any case, his last scene more than makes up for any lameness, so he’s excused.
Other than that, I liked this episode a lot, even though I still don’t think it’s as good as most of the others. I do have to say my expectations are a lot lower than normal for BSG right now, but as I figure they’ll get back on track eventually, I’ll only be pleasantly surprised.
Things that were cool:
- The conflict between Kat and Starbuck. It was really well done.
- Starbuck and her conversation with Boomer.
- Also, the reincarnated Raiders. It’s logical and cool at the same time. I was hoping that maybe it would come up that Scar was actually the Raider Starbuck had killed/captured, but it was still played out well without it.
- Actually, I thought Starbuck was pretty much generally awesome in this episode. I knew they could do a believable character break-down.
- Flippy spaceships. Yay.
- Apollo at the end. Awww.
- Helo at the end! The end was basically just awesome.
- The way Starbuck said “Bright and shiny” sounded very Firefly-esque. Heh.
So, about the previews: is Apollo getting taken hostage again? How many parallels to “Bastille Day” are they going to do? I mean, it was an awesome episode and all, but seriously.
