It's more like a big ball of wibbley-wobbley... timey-wimey... stuff
So, Kirstin and I totally figured out how Azazel's ev0l plan (specifically, Dean's part in it) actually works out.
One of the problems with Azazel's ev0L plan, as revealed in "In the Beginning", is that itmakes no fucking sense seems like a bad idea to constantly dismiss Dean as a potential threat when he has been known to associate with angels and then TRAVEL THROUGH TIME TO TRY TO KILL YOU. For example, you might want to consider, oh, NOT BRINGING HIM BACK FROM THE NOT-QUITE-DEAD.
My best guess was that Azazel figured that since Dean was trying to kill him in the past, he had failed in the future, and thus had nothing to worry about later on. However, Kirstin points out that by "In My Time of Dying," Dean has met Azazel only once before ending up in a coma. However, Azazel also knows that the Dean who ends up in 1973 has also met him at least once (ETA: and had been touched by an angel, which IMTOD!Dean had not), and it's this Dean that helps contribute to the events that lead Mary to make the deal and produce Azazel's number one candidate for Antichrist Superstar, Sam. And since clearly he likes Sam best, this means he needs to risk bringing Dean back in order to maintain the events of the past. (As a bonus, this means he gets possession of the only gun that can kill him, AND gets rid of John, who is not only his biggest threat, but is also the only Winchester that is not important to causality and who he can kill without messing things up...OR SO HE THINKS).
Thus, it is in his best interest to bring Dean back in exchange for the Colt and John's soul. Tellingly, when he informs John that Dean is not a threat, he also says that he's not interested in Sam, which we all know is a BIG FAT LIE and thus strongly suggests that he's lying about Dean just as easily.
However, we then get to the end of season 2, where it suddenly looks like Azazel is all "Screw causality, I'm gonna kill me a Winchester!" But this STILL can be explained, because Azazel knows that 1) Dean in 1973 has angelic help, and 2) Dean in 2007 JUST SOLD HIS SOUL, which means that he's going to end up dying and going to Hell anyway. So it's a good bet that if angels want Dean, they'll yank him out of Hell regardless of when he got there, and killing him a year ahead of schedule won't mess anything up.
This plan has several benefits:
1) Azazel's time-traveling nemesis ENDS UP IN HELL, at least for a while
2) He gets rid of the last bullet in the Colt, which is the only mortal weapon that can kill him
3) Sam is deprived of Dean's influence, which is the biggest obstacle keeping him from going Dark Side
4) Azazel gets even more leverage over Sam, either by offering to bring back Dean himself in exchange for Sam leading the army of darkness, or by pointing out that Sam needs to lead the army of darkness if he wants to get ahold of Dean's contract
So really, it all makes sense. Well, at least right up until you get to "Wait, what WAS Azazel trying to accomplish, anyway?" but we'll have to wait for more information on that, or at least a declaration of "Yes, this was totally his goal all along, I don't care if this retcon makes no sense, just go with it."

I'm so proud of SPN. It's like after three seasons of looking cute and running into walls, they suddenly and unexpectedly managed to save little Timmy from the well.

I mean, I fully expect them to pee on the carpet at some point, but it's nice to know they're worth having around, apart from looking cute. :D
