I consider Gwen to be the British version of Lana Lang -- who also won't die and who has apparently improved (though it took six years and frankly I've long since lost interest in Smallville.) Basically one of those characters that the writers love to bits and thus have absolutely no objectivity about. Grr.

I'm considering watching series two -- we'll see how much time I have, which will depend on how many shows get axed this season on US TV (which is having a surprisingly good year, sci-fi-wise).
