The writers actually came up with a (sort of) plausible reason to get rid of Gwen and replace her with the (vastly more entertaining, competent, and generally awesome) Suzie. And then they threw it away!
This episode is pretty much the worst of the writers' Sue-ish love for Gwen, I think, so Suzie didn't stand a chance. But she would have been a pretty awesome nemesis, or rogue team member who they don't trust and yet can't get rid of.
I've heard good things about series two, but since Gwen has apparently not yet died in a horrifically painful fashion, I don't know that I'll be able to bring myself to watch it.
Gwen is much improved in Series 2, IMO. Or at least, the writing for her is much improved, so people stop giving her cookies for being CARING and HUMAN. As much.
I personally was more annoyed by all the random Jack/Gwen stuff, but I ignored it and then it went away! Also, most of it is counteracted by Eve Myles making ridiculous faces, John Barrowman making ridiculous faces, or awesome things in Gwen-heavy episodes like the infamous Greenhouse Scene. Even my sister, who pretty much hates Gwen with the fiery passion of a thousand blazing suns, was able to get through Series 2 relatively unscathed.
