Your discussion of different writing styles in LOTR reminds me that once again, hobbits are superior to all other life forms. By the latter books, nineteenth century snark was a relief against all the Lo!s.

Nothing like a hobbit to inject some common sense into the proceedings!

Mytho, the pantsless wonder?

TURNS OUT THERE'S A REASON HE NEVER WEARS PANTS ;D

It's an interesting point you raise re: Cohen. He's technically a Mighty Whitey, but he's also a proxy for Genghis Khan as much as he is for Conan, so that would sort of reflect on your views of the Mongolian invasion of China.

Yeah, it makes perfect sense for him to invade with a Horde :D. (I love the part where someone goes "So why do you have a huge wall surrounding the empire?" and someone else answers "To keep the barbarians... out..." and Cohen is all "Yeah, NICE JOB".) The Mighty Whitey part would come in with the ideological clash, I guess, where Cohen and the rest of the Horde have to save everyone with their barbarian bad habits and huge chunks of meat, since the Agateans are too used to being obedient. Or something.
