So, if you are like me and totally fail at following current events, Pakistan is kind of underwater at this point and definitely needs everyone's help. You can text FLOOD to 27722 to donate $10; the Department of State's website has more info.

In much happier news, Elizabeth got married this weekend! Huzzah! Highlights include:

-- seeing Natasha before she flees to Tibet
-- being able to tell people we got kicked out of a club at the bachelorette partay
-- STEAMPUNK ANTLER EARRINGS (thanks, Katherine!)
-- contra dancing with Laura and unexpected Mike!
-- the wedding ceremony quietly being crashed by random Turkish tourists
-- Meera's bf deciding to tell everyone he was an Ultimate Fighter at the reception

Sadly, I was not able to go down to the 'Burg on Sunday and see more people :(

However, I did make it to the last concert of the Folk Fest, which was awesome! Even if I DID miss Vienna Teng on Friday, alas. I particularly liked Malinky, Rockin' Acoustic Circus, and Richard Thompson. I also picked up "Book of Sparrows" by Tracy Grammer, but I don't know if I like it yet -- it's very mellow.

And then I made banana bread yesterday. Mmmm, banana bread.

I like bananas! Bananas are good. )

In conclusion: I apparently missed the Back to School Meeting, which may or may not have been mandatory. Whoops? In my defense, I have received absolutely no information about it, aside from that the retirement plan rep would be appearing in the district at some point and other people were supposed to call him. I guess I am not included in the district's Psychic Information Network :(

In case you haven't heard, there was a terrible earthquake in Haiti. Donate to the Red Cross by text message.

My parents flew out this morning to Hawaii (incidentally hiding my car keys before they went). Bitter? A tad.

Anyways, I started rereading the Earthsea books!

Come and listen to a story about a man named Ged / A powerful mage, who went and tried to raise the dead, / A pissing contest to soothe his wounded pride, / But out through the veil, something from the other side. / Gebbeth, that is! Black wraith, shadow of death. )

Gender!FAIL aside, I definitely still like the first book. It reminded me a lot of Patricia McKillip's Riddlemaster Trilogy (well, technically it would be the other way around), which I definitely recommend for reasons of less gender!FAIL, and also, AWESOME.

I'll leave you with this quote. Lulz were had. :D

"Sparkweed," said Jasper. "They grow where the wind dropped the ashes of burning Ilien, when Erreth-Akbe defended the Inward Isles from the Firelord" (43).

So I seriously spent an embarrassingly long time seeing all these posts mentioning [livejournal.com profile] ibarw and thinking "Cool, I wonder if that's Welsh for something?"

In case you, too, are brainfully challenged, it is International Blog Against Racism Week and thus I have posted to say that this blog is AGAINST RACISM. Also, you should follow the link above because many people have said much more enlightening things about the subject than I have!

However, if there is one area where I feel I can be relatively eloquent, it is talking about how things FAIL and then making fun of them. As I have said before, The Last Failbender is the EXTREMELY racefaily adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, American Asian-Inspired Fantasy Cartoon of Awesome and WIN. The roles of the four leads, who are Tibetan-ish, Inuit-ish, also Inuit-ish, and Japanese-ish, resulted in the initial casting of, respectively, an unknown white dude from Texas*, a random white actress, a white actor from Twilight, and a white teenybopper. I'm sure you've spotted the flaw here. (Actually, several flaws. Hint: they involve the words "Twilight" and "teenybopper".)

* It's not ACTUALLY this dude, but it might as well be.

Subsequent uproar by fans and people with good taste resulted in the replacement of Jesse McCartney (::headdesk::) with Dev Patel (YAY), meaning that the leads were now only 75% whiter than they should've been. However, this also meant that the only lead actor of color was also the BAD GUY.

In conclusion: EPIC FAIL.

Depress your actors with RACE!FAIL! Coming next summer to a theater near you.

And yet, everyone involved with the movie maintains that it's not racist and upholds the original show's spirit o' diversity. Right. [livejournal.com profile] aang_aint_white has more information, as well as links to online petitions and addresses to encourage your urge to write angry letters. At the very least, don't spend money on this movie, please.

And this is the part where I make fun of it for being lamesauce in addition to whitewashy. )

So, some serious linkage on rape culture! An extremely fun subject, I know, but being as this is kind of an important problem, worth sharing.

You know what sucks? Finding out that an author that you like has jumped headlong into writing race FAIL. It's bad enough READING it, but at least in some cases you can MAYBE attribute it to carelessness or ignorance (HAI THAR TOLKIEN) as opposed to active malicious intent. Whereas this is just so shockingly insensitive, if not purposefully offensive, I don't even know what to say. Actually, I do: if ORSON SCOTT CARD can address this "problem" SO CAN YOU. Granted, I think that was pre-radical/CRAZY Orson Scott Card, but STILL.

In conclusion: please don't buy "The Thirteenth Child" by Patricia C. Wrede. I love her other books, but this is unconscionable. (And while we're at it, don't contribute money to The Last Failbender either.)

Dear Entertainment:

YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ENTERTAINING, NOT PERPETUATING HARMFUL SOCIAL PREJUDICES AND INEQUALITIES. STOP THAT RIGHT NOW.

Sincerely,
Dave

So, if you haven't encountered RaceFail '09 yet, you should probably go check it out (ETA: here is a good and concise summary of events)-- not because it's particularly fun to watch various pro SFF authors make bigger and bigger racist and/or white-privileged assholes of themselves and the world a more exclusive and difficult place for persons of color, but because there's been a lot of thoughtful and thought-provoking posts about what it means to be a fan of color (not to mention those on racism, white privilege, and how not to behave on the internet), which I think everyone should read as part of our education in becoming decent human beings.

In more positive news, I was very pleased to find Naomi Novik weighing in on the right side of the debate, because it's always encouraging to find out that the author of awesome books is awesome too.

Anyways, this segues nicely into a rec for her books. Specifically, His Majesty's Dragon, which you can now read for FREE, because the only thing more awesome than a FREE BOOK is a FREE BOOK about the Napoleonic War with DRAGONS. It's like you have really awesome historical fiction and really awesome fantasy BUT TOGETHER IN ONE BOOK. THAT'S FREE. Plus the characters are amazing, the plots are exciting and fast-paced, and there are interesting AU historical tidbits that imply, for example, that all of Admiral Nelson is a zombie instead of just his arm. Also, literally every person I have made read these has loved them, all the way from my brother who seems to read only Star Wars EU books to my sister who talks about why books are awesome for a living.

In conclusion: AWESOME FREE BOOK.
